Abstract
Mirror movements are involuntary movements executed on one side of the body during voluntary movements of the contralateral homologous body parts. They are observed frequently in normally developing children. A 15-year-old man, who suffered from infectious endocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy, presented with sudden hemiplegia in the right upper and lower limbs. Diffusion weighted MR images showed large infarction in left hemisphere. MR angiography revealed occlusion of left middle cerebral artery. He had congenital mirror movements of the hands and forearms. After stroke, he did not move the right hand voluntarily. But, there were obvious mirror movements of the right hand and fingers. We report a case of persistent mirror movements after cerebral infarction. We propose that the potential for bilateral interactions to occur in various brain regions will be responsible for the mechanism of mirror movements.
